summer checklist: 30 things to do in north beach

Monday, June 25, 2012

I've been living in North Beach for almost a year and a half, but when I saw today's Refinery 29 slideshow of 29 things to do North Beach I realized I have been living under a rock and haven't appreciated my wonderful neighborhood. Since I will be leaving this part of the city very soon (we're moving in August!), I'm setting a personal summer goal to visit ALL of these places before I leave (and I've added a couple more that's been on my list.) I mean come on, how adorable does Little Vine look! I don't know how I haven't been there yet- it's a crying shame I tell you!! So here's my checklist:

  1. Tony's Pizza (DONE! I'm ashamed to admit that I go here at least once a week. I'm a sucker for delicious crush and greasy pockets of pepperoni!)
  2. Washington Square Park (DONE! This grassy escape has provided me with a comfy and entertaining place to take so many afternoon naps and play hours of ladder golf. Not to mention it was the meeting spot for the post epic pre-Bay to Breakers celebration I've ever seen.)
  3. Mama's (DONE! The most adorable breakfast place, if you don't mind waiting 3 hours for breakfast)
  4. 15 Romolo (DONE! This is our favorite go-to happy hour spot. I feel so hipster whenever I go there, and they just so happen to make the best greyhound I've ever tasted)
  5. Park Tavern (DONE. We had our last big anniversary dinner here, and it was definitely one to remember. The interior is decorated so cool and is such a lovely place to spend a special evening.)
  6. Musee Mecanique (DONE, but I want to go again :) It's such a fun, old school penny arcade with the BEST photobooth I've ever experienced. A total tourist trap but one of my favorite places in the city
  7. ACRE/SF
  8. Public Barber Salon. (I'm a sucker for bookshelves. I melted when I saw this interior!)
  9. Aria Antiques
  10. Little Vine
  11. Molinari Delicatessen
  12. The Filbert Steps (DONE. I run these suckers every day! or I did once....)
  13. Al's Attire
  14. Naked Lunch
  15. City Lights Bookseller and Publishers (One of the number one attractions in the city and it's only a couple of blocks from my house..I can't believe I haven't spent hours in here already. I must be a hermit)
  16. Schein & Schien (Jack is a old map fiend, so this place is a definitely must to visit on our next local date night)
  17. The House
  18. Cafe Zoetrope
  19. Park & Pond (Jack has bought my last 3 birthday/anniversary cards there and I've loved every one. They are just so creative and cute!)
  20. Specs
  21. Cafe Trieste
  22. Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store Cafe (DONE! When two of my friends and I were unemployed and newly living in the city we spent an entire afternoon at Mario's people watching and eating eggplant sandwiches. Those were the days...)
  23. The Chubby Noodle (This is the sistafran of out favorite dinner spot, Don Pistos, so I'm very surprised I have not tried this so far!)
  24. Comstock Saloon
  25. Vesuvio (This place is covered in beautiful murals and always looks so enticing.)
  26. Don Pistos (DONE. I don't know if I've raved about this place enough, but we are SERIOUSLY obsessed. Jack and I went three times in one week. Obsessed. There chips and quac and margarita combo might be the best food combination in the whole ENTIRE world. I'm not exaggerating. Not one bit.)
  27. AB Fits
  28. Capo's
  29. Txoko
  30. Bimbo's 365 (DONE. We saw The English Beat here and it was a night to remember. Nothing like being the youngest person at a concert by a good 30 years.)

Happy first day of summer!
For the first time in history San Francisco has decided to behave like a normal city and has embraced summer by providing us with gorgeous warm weather. I can't help myself from dreaming about being poolside/beachside/lakeside/anywhere with water and soaking up the sun over the next couple of months, and to celebrate this incessant daydream, I thought I'd share some of my summer favorites: summer dresses, sunny day sandals, state fairs, wide angle cameras, backyard dinner parties, bonfires, river floating, s'mores, summer adventure outfits, Tahoe, 4th of July, and OUTSIDELANDS!

Boyfriend gets home today
I could not be more excited
It's no fun when he is gone
I eat microwave dinners and force myself to work out to waste time
No fun at all

+ girls night watching the original Alien and Steel Magnolias. Which was the best movie combo ever. Plus Steel Magnolias is my new favorite movie (cried like a blubbering baby)
+ obsessing over the weather (78 degrees and no wind or fog in sight? Yes please!)
+ picnics in Alamo Square with a gorgeous few of the Painted Ladies and the city followed by snuggles and cuddling in the sun
+ cheering Jack on as he did the Dispsea Race (he crushed it, of course. so proud)
+ spending the morning at my favorite childhood beach, reading a good book and soaking up the sun
+ brunch at our favorite hometown diner in the beating sun of sunny marin
+ breakfast for dinner...and lunch
+ finally catching up on Glee (I gave us after Quinn was in the horrific car accident then ended up being totally fine in a wheel chair the next episode. And they were singing too many show tunes.)
+ preparing to shoot a golf tournament tomorrow!! Any tips??
